The cover tape is mainly used in the electronic component mounting industry. It is used in conjunction with a carrier belt to store electronic components such as resistors, capacitors, transistors, diodes, etc. in the pocket of the carrier belt. The cover belt is sealed above the pocket formed by the carrier belt to form a closed packaging, used to protect electronic components from contamination and damage during transportation. During the installation of electronic components, the cover strip is peeled off, and the automatic installation device accurately locates the components held in the pocket through the index hole of the carrier strip. The components are then sequentially removed and placed on the integrated circuit board (PCB).
Divided by the width of the cover strip
According to the width of the matched carrier belt, the cover belt is also divided into different widths. Common widths include 5.3 mm (5.4 mm), 9.3 mm, 13.3 mm, 21.3 mm, 25.5 mm, 37.5 mm, etc. [1]
Classified by sealing characteristics
According to the characteristics of adhesive bonding and detachment from the carrier tape, the cover tape can be divided into three types: thermal sensitive cover tape (HAA), pressure sensitive cover tape (PSA), and new universal cover tape (UCT).
1. Heat sensitive cover tape (HAA)
The sealing of thermosensitive cover belt is realized by the sealing machine applying temperature and pressure through the sealing presser foot to melt and press the Hot-melt adhesive of the cover belt on the sealing surface of the carrier belt. The thermosensitive cover tape has no stickiness at room temperature and only becomes sticky after heating. [2]
2. Pressure sensitive cover strip (PSA)
The sealing of pressure sensitive cover tape is achieved by applying continuous pressure through a pressure roller by a sealing machine, causing the pressure sensitive adhesive of the cover tape to adhere to the carrier tape. The two sides of the pressure sensitive cover tape have stickiness at room temperature and can be used without heating. [2]
3. New Universal Cover Tape (UCT)
The adhesive strength of the cover tape on the market is mainly controlled by the adhesive force of the adhesive. However, due to the different surface materials of the same adhesive, the adhesive strength of the adhesive may vary under different temperature environments and aging conditions. In addition, there may be residual adhesive pollution during peeling. In order to solve these specific problems, a new type of universal cover tape has been introduced in the market, It no longer relies on the adhesive force of the adhesive to control the peeling force, but through accurate mechanical processing, two deep grooves are cut on the base film of the cover strip. When peeling, the cover strip tears along the groove, and the peeling force is not related to the adhesive force of the adhesive, but only affected by the cutting depth and the mechanical strength of the film, to ensure the stability of the peeling force. In addition, due to the fact that only the middle part of the cover strip is peeled off during the peeling process, while both sides of the cover strip still adhere to the sealing line of the carrier strip, it also reduces the pollution of residual adhesive and debris on the equipment and components.
